'The leaves of the lotus flower have delightful self-cleansing properties. Droplets of water pick up dirt. They collect like a jewel in the centre of the lotus leaf. And roll off and away, carrying the dirt with them.
This special self-cleansing ability was recognized in Asia long ago. It's referred to in the Bhagavad Gita.
'Focus your attentive awareness on your practice, without attachment. You will be cleansed like a lotus leaf.'
Bhagavad Gita 5:10
In the 1970s, lotus leaves were first studied under an electron microscope. The self-cleansing phenomenon of 'ultrahydrophobic micro-nanostructured surfaces' was explained for the first time. It was described as 'the lotus effect' .
